Meter System Upgrade
The Meter System Upgrade (MSU) project is now underway to replace most water and electric meter equipment across the town, reaching every residential and commercial Apex utility customer. These advancements help to provide an efficient utility system that can adapt to the demands of our growing town.
To complete this large-scale initiative, Apex has contracted Ferguson Waterworks to manage the replacement project. Their subcontractor, US Bronco, will handle the installations.
Phase 2 - Electric Meter Replacement
- Status: In progress (began October 2025)
- Description: An electric meter is a device that measures the amount of electricity used in a home or business.
- Who is Affected: Most electric customers will receive upgraded electric meters. This work began in October 2025. Some newly constructed homes already have the upgraded electric meter installed.
What to Expect
- Crews will complete this work Monday through Saturday, from 8 am to 5 pm.
- Residents will notice trucks with US Bronco branding, and additional town signage as shown on this page.
- When the contractor arrives, they’ll knock to inform the resident about the meter replacement. If no one answers, the contractor will leave a door hanger with details of the work performed.
- Since meters are located outdoors, residents do not need to be home during installation. Before and after photos will be taken to ensure work areas are left in good condition.
- If a meter is inaccessible due to a locked gate or other obstacle, residents will be asked to schedule a follow-up.
- If a padlock has been placed on the meter base, the resident will be asked to remove the lock. If the resident is not present, it may be necessary for the contractor to cut the lock and remove it.
- This work may cause a brief power loss of less than one minute, which could require the resident to reset clocks and electronic devices.
Phase 1 - Water Meter Infrastructure (complete)
- Status: Complete
- Water Meter Endpoint Replacement: An endpoint is the device attached to your water meter that enables wireless data transmission. All water customers received a replacement of their current water endpoint.
- Water Meter and Endpoint Replacement: Approximately 25% of customers (typically in older areas of town) had water meters that were not compatible with the upgraded endpoints. Therefore, they received a meter and endpoint replacement.
Why Now?
Keeping up with advancements in utility technology is essential to maintaining reliable service and meeting the evolving needs of the community. While this project has been in the works for several years, the implementation phase began in September 2023.
Project Benefits
- Usage Insights for Customers: Customers will be able to view greater detail for their utility usage based on time of day, helping them identify opportunities for conservation and cost savings. This feature will be available for customers with the upgraded endpoint, a few weeks after the town's new customer portal launches in summer of 2025.
- Faster Problem Resolution: Utility staff will be able to quickly detect leaks, outages, or unusual consumption patterns, as a result of the upgraded equipment.
- Operational Efficiency: Currently, meter technicians drive along dozens of routes once every month, while receiving wireless readings from the meter endpoint through a unit in their vehicle. Upgraded meter endpoints will transmit readings directly to the town without the need to drive through routes.
