International Compost Awareness Week

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry, and is celebrated nationwide and internationally each year during the first full week of May. Starting in Canada in 1995, ICAW has continued to grow as more people, businesses, municipalities, schools and organizations are recognizing the importance of composting and the long-term benefits of organics recycling. The goal of the program is to raise community awareness around compost benefits!

Regional Opportunities

Discounted Compost Bin Program

Every year, Wake County offers a Discounted Compost Bin Program during the month of May, in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week. Backyard compost bins can divert an average of 650 pounds of organic waste per household from the landfill each year.

NCSU Compost Facility & Research Cooperative

The NC State University Compost Facility and Research Cooperative is located off of Lake Wheeler Road and nestled between NC State’s agriculture farms. It is permitted as a Large Type III facility by the NC Department of Environmental Quality and allows NC State to close the loop with organic waste management. Learn more and schedule a tour today! 

Towards Zero Waste
