What is the role of an advisory board? 

The purpose of Town appointed boards is to provide expert advice, guidance, and recommendations to the elected body within the organization and community on a specific focus area or Town priority.

Serving as an advisory board member is an opportunity to collaborate with local government officials and to help shape decisions and policies that impact our Town to ultimately make a difference.

How do I apply to serve?

If I have applied previously, do I need to reapply? 

Yes. The Resident Advisory Board application was redesigned and adopted by the Apex Town Council on February 25, 2025. Staff in the Town Clerk’s Office will be contacting previous applicants to provide additional instructions. 

How do I learn more about each of the resident advisory boards? 

The Apex Town Council is currently reviewing the scope and responsibility of each resident advisory board. While a few minor changes are expected, the core duties and responsibilities will likely remain the same. To view more information about each advisory board, visit the pages linked above. 

What is the difference between Council Committees and Resident Advisory Boards? 

Council Committees are comprised of two elected governing body members. Resident advisory boards are residents who have been appointed by Council to serve. 

What are the requirements to serve? 

  • All members must be 18-years of age or older with the exception of the “youth” representative position.  
  • Current on Town of Apex and Wake County Taxes 
  • Live within the Town of Apex Corporate Limits, unless otherwise specified or required. 

What defines a youth representative?

A youth representative is defined as a member of the community currently attending an Apex-based high school, and at least 16 years of age. Boards that have a voting youth representatives are: Arts & Culture Advisory Board, Environmental Advisory Board, and Multimodal Transportation Advisory Board. The remainder of the board have non-voting youth representatives.

What are the term lengths? 

Except for the Board of Adjustment, all resident advisory board terms are two-years with a maximum of six consecutive years. Board of Adjustment members serve three-year terms with a maximum of nine consecutive years. If a member resigns, a resident may be appointed for a partial term. 

Are resident advisory board positions volunteer or paid? 

All members are eligible for a stipend of $50 per meeting attended. Stipends are paid quarterly based on attendance, through the Office of the Town Clerk. 

Can I apply and serve on more than one board at a time? 

Residents are encouraged to apply for all boards they are interested in serving. However a resident may only be appointed to one standing advisory at a time. 

Are meetings held in-person or virtually?  

All meetings are held in-person, open to the public, and livestreamed. The Board of Adjustment meetings are audio-recorded and open to the public but not livestreamed.   

What happens after I apply?

The Office of the Town Clerk will confirm receipt your application within 48-hours of submission. If additional information is needed, you will be contacted by a member of the Clerk’s Office. Applications are accepted year-round and may be considered at the time of any unexpected or anticipated vacancy. If you are being considered for appointment, you will be contacted by the Town Clerk’s Office and may be contacted by the Mayor or members of the Apex Town Council.
